The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Discovered on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a popular holiday spot. Furthermore well known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a substantial income source for the local fishermen over the generations.

The town today has a population of just under eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there were certainly Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is conceivable that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now lies. An additional settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely swallowed by the ocean, roughly four hundred meters from the pier.

Cromer itself originally sat some distance inland, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained over the generations predominantly by the ability of its fishermen, a business which prospered up to the 60's as fish numbers declined. In addition to lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often hazardous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from rowed boats.

Tourism commenced in the town early in the 19th century, and it was acknowledged for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, bringing increasing numbers of tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another train station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled around a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the fourteenth century, but was remodelled in the 19th century and presently boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
