Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation spot ever since the 19th century. Additionally renowned for being a fishing town, Cromer is world famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an essential source of income for its fishermen for many generations.

Cromer nowadays has a population of just below eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is not disputed that there were Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was situated where the parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely swallowed by the sea, about four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was eventually eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived throughout the ages for the most part through the prowess of its fishermen, an industry that prospered until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish dropped. Aside from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally treacherous conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived at the town in 1877, carrying more and more travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station linking it to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, although it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and at the moment has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
