The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Set on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured holiday spot. Furthermore known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a leading source of income for its fishermen for many generations.

The town at present has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Saxon communites in the area, it is conceivable that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it sat where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally swallowed by the ocean, about four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself at one time stood inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived over the ages mainly by the competence of its fishermen, an industry that prospered up to the nineteen sixties as the numbers of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were typically crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling powered lifeboats to replace rowed boats.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early 19th century, and it was famous for the clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in 1877, bringing lots more travellers to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th C, although it was remodelled in the 19thC and now boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
