The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Located on the north coast of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favorite holiday destination. Furthermore recognized as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income source for the fishermen since early days.

Cromer currently has a populace of just under eight thousand inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there were certainly Saxon communites in the region, it is quite possible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. A different village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely under the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself at one time was positioned some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially over the years principally due to the skill of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up to the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish declined. In addition to the lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally unsafe sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were more often than not operated by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered craft.

Tourism commenced in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was famous for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system was connected to the town in 1877, delivering increasing numbers of travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional railway station to the East Midlands was opened about ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, but was rebuilt during the 19th century and at present has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
