The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Found on the north coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation location ever since the nineteenth century. Equally respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been an important source of income for its fishermen since early times.

The town at this time has a population of just under 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that it is a fact that there were Saxon communites in the region, it is feasible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it was located where the parish church now stands. A different village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely covered by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago sat some way inland, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived economically across the decades largely through the prowess of its fishermen, a business which flourished until the 60's when fish numbers declined. Besides the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes unsafe conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were often crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to replace man-powered craft.

Tourism developed in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was acknowledged for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in 1877, carrying an ever-increasing amount of people to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd station to the East Midlands was unveiled around 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt during the 1800s and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
