A further village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally under the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially throughout the decades for the most part by the ability of its fishermen, a business that prospered up until the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish went into decline. In addition to the lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently hazardous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

Tourism developed in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was famous for the clean air and health improving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in the town in the 1870s, bringing an ever-increasing quantity of visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional train station joining it to the East Midlands opened around a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church originally dates from the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
