The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Discovered on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured vacation destination. In addition known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an important source of income for its local fishermen through the centuries.

The town at present has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is plausible that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, considering that it was positioned where the parish church now stands. A different settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally under the sea, around 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself long ago sat some way inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the generations largely due to the competence of its fishing fleet, a business that did well until the 60's when the numbers of fish went into decline. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were mostly crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed craft.

The tourism industry began in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was famous for its clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in the 1870s, drawing growing amounts of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. A second train station joining it to the East Midlands was unveiled around 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th century, though it was reconstructed in the 1800s and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
