Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a fashionable vacation spot. Additionally renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a significant income for the local fishermen throughout the decades.

The town at this time has a population of approximately seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is unusual that the name "Cromer" wasn't noted in the Domesday Book (1086), though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is very likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was situated where the parish church now stands. A second village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, around 400 meters north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood some distance inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was gradually over time demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially through the centuries primarily due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well until the 1960's when fish numbers went into decline. Besides lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishermen had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically severe conditions off Norfolk's coastline, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were oftentimes operated by local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered boats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was acknowledged for the clean air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, delivering lots more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another railway station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened about a decade later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th Cent, and it was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and now has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
