The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Situated on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a popular vacation spot. Also known as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important source of income for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer at this time has a populace of just under 8,000 inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is likely that there were Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is conceivable that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now stands. One additional village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, roughly 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer long ago stood inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived through the years predominantly due to the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well up until the nineteen sixties at which time stocks of fish declined. In addition to the the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often risky conditions off Norfolk's coastline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered vessels.

The tourist business developed in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for its clean air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in 1877, carrying an ever-increasing number of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station to the East Midlands opened about a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, though it was remodelled in the 19th century and today boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
