The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, although there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is very likely that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. A second settlement identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely covered by the sea, around 400 metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has managed over the centuries largely by the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up to the nineteen sixties when fish stocks declined. In addition to the lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes life-threatening conditions off the coast of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed craft.

Tourism started in the town early in the 19th century, and it was renowned for its clean air and health giving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering increasing numbers of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate train station linking it to the East Midlands opened about ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt during the 19thC and presently has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
