Cromer in Norfolk: Lying on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a well loved vacation destination since the nineteenth century. Also renowned for being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, providing a major income source for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer currently has a populace of just under eight thousand residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is plausible that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, as it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A different village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely under the sea, approximately 400 meters to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was situated some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived through the decades principally through the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up until the 60's at which time fish numbers went into decline. As well as the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently risky sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were for the most part operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed boats.

Tourism started in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at the town in 1877, delivering increasing numbers of travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. A 2nd station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately ten years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, although it was reconstructed in the 19th century and at the moment has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
