The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured holiday spot. Also renowned as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a substantial source of income for its local fishermen for many centuries.

The town currently has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it was located where the parish church now stands. A second village detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the ocean, roughly 400 metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has managed across the ages mainly through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up to the 60's as fish numbers diminished. In addition to the the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often severe sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were by and large manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered craft.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was acknowledged for the pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, driving growing amounts of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. The second train station to the East Midlands opened up about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th century, although it was remodelled during the 19th century and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 foot).
