The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Lying on the northern coast of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation hotspot since the 19th century. Also respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing an essential source of income for the local fishermen for many generations.

Cromer presently has a population of just below eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that there were certainly Saxon settlements around the area, it is most likely that the community registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it was situated where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. An additional settlement shown in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely under the sea, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer itself originally was situated inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually wiped out by the sea during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially throughout the decades predominantly through the activities of its fishermen, a business that flourished until the 60's as the numbers of fish declined. As well as the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often unsafe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were typically crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered boats.

The holiday industry started in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was famous for the clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in the 1870s, drawing more and more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. The second station to the East Midlands opened up approximately a decade later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, although was remodelled during the Nineteenth century and currently boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
