The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Situated on the northern coast of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday destination since the 1800s. Equally respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a substantial source of income for the fishermen over the years.

Cromer today has a populace of roughly 7,700 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the 1086 Domesday Book, though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is quite possible that the community noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, since it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A different village posted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some way inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially through the centuries mostly by the activity of its fishermen, a business which thrived up to the 1960's as fish numbers declined. As well as the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly operated by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

The tourist industry commenced in the town in the early 1800s, and the town was recognized for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying more and more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th century, although it was remodelled in the 1800s and now has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
