The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Situated on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite holiday destination. In addition respected for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a leading source of income for the fishermen since early times.

The town at present has a population of around eight thousand inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there certainly would have been Saxon townships around the area, it is quite possible that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, considering that it was situated where the parish church now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the sea, around 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time was situated inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived over the ages mostly through the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished until the 1960's at which time stocks of fish declined. In addition to the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes hazardous conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were often crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from rowed vessels.

The holiday industry started out in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and the town was famed for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate station joining it to the East Midlands opened around ten years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt during the 19thC and presently has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
