The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Found on the north coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a fashionable vacation destination. Equally respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been an important source of income for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer presently has a populace of just under 8,000 residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, even though it is undeniable that there were Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is very likely that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, considering that it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. Yet another village identified in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely under the sea, about 400 metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was little by little destroyed by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained across the centuries predominantly by the activity of its fishermen, a business that thrived up until the nineteen sixties when fish stocks decreased. Apart from the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishermen had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often perilous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were predominately manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was renowned for its clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in 1877, delivering more and more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A second rail station to the East Midlands was unveiled roughly 10 years later.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church originates from the fourteenth century, though it was reconstructed during the 19thC and now has the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
