The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), even though there were certainly Saxon encampments around the area, it is plausible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it was placed where the parish church now stands. A further settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago stood inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained economically throughout the ages principally due to the activity of its fishermen, a business that thrived up to the nineteen sixties when fish numbers went into decline. Besides the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often treacherous conditions off the seacoast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were normally operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism business commenced in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was famous for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to Cromer in 1877, drawing lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A 2nd rail station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originally dates from the fourteenth century, but was reconstructed in the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in the county (160 feet).
