The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, however there were certainly Anglo Saxon communites around the area, it is quite possible that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been completely under the sea, around 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time sat inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually destroyed by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained economically over the centuries primarily due to the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished until the 1960's at which time fish numbers declined. Apart from lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The often severe conditions off Norfolk's coast, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were normally crewed by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed boats.

The tourism industry started in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and the town was famous for its clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived in Cromer in 1877, driving increasing amounts of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another railway station to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church originates from the 14th century, though it was rebuilt during the 19th century and today boasts the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
