Cromer in Norfolk: Situated on the north sea coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday location since the 19th century. Also renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a substantial income for the fishermen since early times.

Cromer at this time has a population of just below 8,000 occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is possible that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it sat where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. One additional settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the ocean in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the generations primarily by the activity of its fishermen, an industry which did well up to the 1960's at which time the numbers of fish dropped. Besides the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The commonly unsafe conditions off Norfolk's coast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were typically manned by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, which allowed lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed craft.

The holiday business started in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was recognized for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in the 1870s, drawing a growing amount of visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station joining it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church first dates from the 14th Cent, though it was rebuilt during the Nineteenth century and today has got the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
