Cromer in Norfolk: Sitting on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has long been a favourite holiday spot. Likewise famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a leading income for its local fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town presently has a populace of about 7,700 residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the area, it is most likely that the settlement mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, because it was positioned where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Yet another settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely covered by the sea, roughly four hundred metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally was situated some way inland, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was progressively demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived economically across the years principally by the prowess of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up to the 1960's at which time fish stocks dropped. As well as lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The frequently life-threatening sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, which allowed powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism industry started off in Cromer in the early nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for its pure air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at the town in the 1870s, carrying lots more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th century, although it was rebuilt in the 1800s and now has the highest church tower in the county (160 foot).
