The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the north coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has long been a favorite vacation destination. Furthermore well known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a major income source for its local fishermen since early times.

Cromer at this time has a population of approximately 7,700 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the Domesday Book (1086), though there certainly would have been Saxon communes around the area, it is plausible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been entirely under the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was gradually destroyed by the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

The town has managed economically across the ages predominantly due to the expertise of its fishing fleet, an industry which did well up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish dropped. In addition to the the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often dangerous conditions off Norfolk's coastline, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to replace man-powered craft.

The holiday business started in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for its clean air and healthy sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in the 1870s, drawing growing numbers of visitors to the town and establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate rail station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul first dates from the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
