Cromer in Norfolk: Discovered on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation destination ever since the 1800s. Furthermore respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, providing a leading income for its local fishermen through the ages.

The town nowadays has a population of just under eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863Cromer Historic Past: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book (1086), although it is clear that there were Saxon townships in the area, it is most likely that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now lies. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally covered by the sea, approximately 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time was situated some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was slowly destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived across the generations principally by the activities of its fishermen, a business which thrived until the 60's when fish numbers declined. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were predominately manned by local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The tourist business started in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in 1877, drawing a growing quantity of visitors to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate station to the East Midlands was opened roughly ten years later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, and it was reconstructed in the 19thC and at present boasts the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
