The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Set on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a celebrated holiday destination since the 19th century. In addition recognized for being a fishing town, Cromer is renowned for its crabs and lobsters, which have been a substantial income for its fishermen for many centuries.

Cromer at this time has a populace of about 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: The name "Cromer" was not listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there were certainly Saxon communites in the area, it is very likely that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it was situated where the parish church now stands. A second village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely swallowed by the ocean, about 400m north-east of Cromer's pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat some way inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured throughout the generations mainly due to the activity of its fishermen, a business that thrived until the nineteen sixties as stocks of fish declined. Aside from lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly severe conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were oftentimes manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed vessels.

The holiday industry began in the town early in the 1800s, and it was celebrated for the pure air and health improving bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying increasing numbers of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An additional train station linking it to the East Midlands opened up about a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, but was remodelled in the 1800s and now boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
