The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is strange that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there were certainly Saxon townships in the region, it is plausible that the community documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it was placed where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. Yet another village registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today completely under the sea, approximately 400 metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer long ago was positioned from the coast, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has managed economically over the centuries for the most part through the expertise of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered until the 60's as fish stocks dropped. Aside from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The normally unsafe sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were more often than not crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was recognized for the pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more travellers to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A second station to the East Midlands opened around a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, although was reconstructed during the Nineteenth century and now has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
