Cromer in Norfolk: Set on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a popular vacation spot ever since the nineteenth century. Likewise known as a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an essential source of income for the fishermen since early days.

The town currently has a population of just below eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not documented in the Domesday Book of 1086, nonetheless it is not disputed that there were Saxon communites in the area, it is quite possible that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it was placed where the Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally under the sea, around 400m from Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally was situated some distance inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was eventually demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially across the centuries by and large by the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish numbers declined. In addition to the lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes dangerous sea conditions off Norfolk's coast, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously man-powered boats.

Tourism started out in Cromer early in the 19th century, and the town was recognized for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in 1877, drawing a growing quantity of tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional railway station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the 14th C, but was reconstructed in the Nineteenth century and now boasts the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
