The holiday industry started in Cromer in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was famed for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived in Cromer in the 1870s, carrying an increasing quantity of visitors to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An additional station to the East Midlands was opened roughly 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, but was rebuilt in the 19th century and today boasts the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
