The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not noted in the Domesday Book of 1086, however there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is possible that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, since it was positioned where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. One additional village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now entirely under the sea, about 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was situated from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was steadily destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has sustained economically over the years mainly due to the activities of its fishermen, an industry which flourished up until the 1960's at which time fish numbers went into decline. As well as lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The frequently life-threatening sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were frequently manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed vessels.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was recognized for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway found its way to the town in the 1870s, carrying more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An alternate station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up around ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th Cent, though it was rebuilt in the 19thC and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
