The Norfolk Seaside Town of Cromer: Sitting on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known holiday hotspot since the 1800s. Equally known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a significant income for the local fishermen since early days.

The town nowadays has a populace of about seven thousand seven hundred occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is accepted that there were Anglo Saxon encampments in the area, it is probable that the village noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. One additional settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been totally under the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer itself once upon a time sat some way inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly eradicated by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived economically through the decades largely by the competence of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered until the nineteen sixties as stocks of fish decreased. As well as lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically life-threatening conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were mostly operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered vessels.

The holiday business began in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system found its way to Cromer in the 1870s, driving lots more people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. A second railway station to the East Midlands opened around ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originally dates from the fourteenth century, but was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
