The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the 1086 Domesday Book, however there were certainly Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is probable that the community listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was located where the parish church now lies. A second settlement detailed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely covered by the sea, roughly 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time stood inland from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was over time demolished by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived throughout the years predominantly by the expertise of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived up until the 60's at which time fish stocks declined. Aside from the legendary Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the town's fishing fleet had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The normally unsafe sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, triggered the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were almost entirely manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism started off in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was famous for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, drawing more and more tourists to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station to the East Midlands opened about a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, although was remodelled during the 19th century and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
