Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favorite vacation spot. Also recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a vital income source for its fishermen through the decades.

The town presently has a populace of roughly 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, though there were certainly Saxon townships in the area, it is probable that the village documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, because it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A further village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally under the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer originally stood some way from the coast, but the former town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

Cromer has endured economically over the decades primarily due to the activity of its fishermen, an industry which thrived up until the 60's when the numbers of fish declined. In addition to lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were frequently crewed by the local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed craft.

The tourism industry began in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was recognized for its clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying growing amounts of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An extra train station linking it to the East Midlands opened around ten years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originally dates from the 14th C, although was reconstructed during the 1800s and now has the tallest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
