The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, even though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now lies. A different settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally covered by the sea, approximately 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself originally was positioned inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and subsequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained across the decades predominantly by the skill of its fishing fleet, a business which prospered up until the 60's at which time fish numbers went into decline. Apart from lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the town's fishermen were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were for the most part operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed craft.

The tourist industry started in the town in the early nineteenth century, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to the town in the 1870s, carrying lots more travellers to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd station connecting it to the East Midlands opened roughly 10 years after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, although it was rebuilt during the 19th century and at present has got the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
