The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: It is peculiar that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the Domesday Book of 1086, though there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is feasible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was located where the parish church now stands. One additional village listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally covered by the sea, about 400m north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some distance inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually demolished by the ocean in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially across the generations largely due to the activities of its fishing fleet, a business which thrived until the 60's at which time fish numbers decreased. As well as lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The generally perilous sea conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were for the most part manned by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism commenced in Cromer early in the 1800s, and the town was famed for its clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The train came to Cromer in 1877, carrying a growing quantity of people to the town and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second station linking it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately ten years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed in the 1800s and today has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
