Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the north sea coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a well known vacation location since the 1800s. Also well known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a substantial income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer currently has a populace of roughly eight thousand inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, although it is accepted that there were Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is probable that the community recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, given it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and Saint Paul now lies. Another settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely swallowed by the sea, approximately 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly demolished by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially over the centuries principally due to the activity of its fishing fleet, an industry that prospered up until the 60's at which time stocks of fish decreased. Apart from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The regularly risky conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were largely manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously man-powered lifeboats.

The tourist business started out in the town early in the 1800s, and it was famed for its pure air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later adapted into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in 1877, carrying an ever-increasing quantity of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. A 2nd railway station joining it to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul originates from the fourteenth century, but was rebuilt during the 19th century and today has got the highest church tower in the county (at 160 foot).
