The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Standing on the north coastline of Norfolk county in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a popular vacation destination. Also reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, providing a substantial income source for its local fishermen throughout the centuries.

The town at this time has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the region, it is plausible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, since it stood where the parish church now stands. Yet another settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally covered by the sea, around 400 metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself at one time sat some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured throughout the ages mainly through the activities of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up until the 1960's at which time fish numbers went into decline. As well as lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the local fishing fleet had been kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The typically perilous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were normally crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, allowing powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered lifeboats.

Tourism developed in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for its clean air and health enhancing bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway came to the town in the 1870s, drawing an increasing number of tourists to the town and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands opened up roughly ten years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th C, though it was rebuilt during the 1800s and currently has the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 foot).
