Cromer Norfolk: Lying on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a well loved holiday destination ever since the nineteenth century. Also known as a fishing town, Cromer is known for its crabs and lobsters, that have been a significant source of income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer these days has a population of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not registered in the Domesday Book (1086), even if there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is certainly likely that the settlement documented as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, since it stood where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. One additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely covered by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago sat some way from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has survived throughout the decades mainly by the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry which flourished up until the 1960's as fish numbers went into decline. In addition to the renowned Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly life-threatening sea conditions off Norfolk's coastline, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were commonly operated by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started in the town early in the nineteenth century, and it was celebrated for the pure air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in the 1870s, delivering lots more tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation destination. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened up around 10 years later.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul was first built in the fourteenth century, although was remodelled in the 19th century and today has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
