The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the north coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and civil parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favoured vacation destination. Furthermore known as a fishing town, Cromer is notable for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important source of income for the fishermen through the ages.

The town these days has a populace of approximately eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't identified in the Domesday Book (1086), although there were certainly Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is certainly likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, given it was positioned where the parish church now stands. One additional village noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely swallowed by the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was progressively eradicated by the sea during the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived financially across the decades mainly due to the prowess of its fishermen, a business that thrived up to the 60's as stocks of fish declined. Apart from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes severe sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were most often manned by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, allowing lifeboats powered by motor to replace rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started out in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was famed for its pure air and healthy sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was redesigned as a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, carrying an increasing number of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. A second train station linking it to the East Midlands was opened around 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th century, and it was rebuilt in the Nineteenth century and now has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
