The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Located on the northern coast of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a favourite vacation hotspot since the nineteenth century. Likewise reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an essential income source for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer at present has a population of approximately 8,000 occupants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not quoted in the 1086 Domesday Book, despite the fact that there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is plausible that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it was situated where the St Peter and St Paul parish church now stands. A further settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally swallowed by the sea, approximately four hundred metres north-east of Cromer Pier.

Cromer long ago was situated some distance inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has sustained across the years principally by the skill of its fishermen, a business which prospered up until the 60's at which time fish numbers declined. Apart from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishermen of the town were occupied long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The quite often hazardous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were normally operated by local fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed craft.

Tourism began in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was renowned for the clean air and beneficial sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in 1820 as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in 1877, bringing more and more visitors to the area and firmly establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An alternate station to the East Midlands opened around a decade after this.

The St Peter and Saint Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, although it was reconstructed in the 19th century and now has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
