Cromer in Norfolk: Set on the north coast of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has for many generations been a favourite vacation destination. Also known for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a major source of income for its local fishermen over the generations.

Cromer these days has a populace of just below 8,000 inhabitants and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is weird that the name "Cromer" was not mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), though it is undeniable that there were Saxon settlements in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, because it sat where the parish church now lies. Yet another village documented in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is these days totally covered by the sea, roughly 400m from Cromer Pier.

Cromer originally was positioned some way from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was slowly but surely wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically through the ages by and large through the activities of its fishing fleet, a business that prospered until the 1960's when fish stocks went into decline. In addition to the the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes hazardous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were commonly manned by the local fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, which permitted lifeboats powered by motor to replace previously rowed boats.

The holiday business developed in the town in the early nineteenth century, and it was famous for the clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later remodelled as a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at the town in the 1870s, driving more and more people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. An extra railway station to the East Midlands was unveiled about a decade later.

The Saint Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the 14th C, and it was rebuilt during the 1800s and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 feet).
