The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, although there were certainly Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is conceivable that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, as it sat where the parish church now stands. A second village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now totally swallowed by the sea, roughly 400 metres from the pier.

Cromer long ago was situated inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer took its place.

The town has survived across the centuries mostly through the activity of its fishermen, an industry that flourished up until the nineteen sixties at which time the numbers of fish declined. Apart from the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally risky sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, led to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were commonly crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, making it possible for powered lifeboats to replace man-powered lifeboats.

The tourism business began in Cromer in the first half of the 1800s, and the town was celebrated for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside residence for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in the 1870s, bringing more and more tourists to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A second rail station connecting it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade after this.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th century, but was rebuilt during the 1800s and today has got the highest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
