The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book, although it is a fact that there were Anglo Saxon communites in the neighborhood, it is quite possible that the village registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what was later to become Cromer, because it stood where the parish church now lies. A further settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been entirely swallowed by the ocean, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned some way inland, but the town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was little by little eradicated by the ocean during the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer replaced it.

The town has managed over the generations largely through the activity of its fishermen, an industry that prospered until the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks declined. Aside from lobster and the celebrated Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were kept busy long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The all too often severe sea conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were normally operated by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to take over from man-powered boats.

The tourism business commenced in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was celebrated for the clean air and health giving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to Cromer in the 1870s, delivering a growing amount of people to the area and establishing it as a holiday destination. An extra train station joining it to the East Midlands opened up roughly a decade after this.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and at the moment has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
