The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Lying on the northern coastline of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has long been a favorite vacation destination. Additionally reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, providing a substantial source of income for the fishermen for many hundreds of years.

The town currently has a populace of just under eight thousand residents and its slogan is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: The name "Cromer" was not quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements in the region, it is likely that the settlement identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul now stands. A second settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been completely covered by the sea, about 400m to the northeast of Cromer Pier.

Cromer at one time was positioned some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived financially throughout the generations predominantly by the skill of its fishermen, a business that flourished up to the nineteen sixties at which time fish stocks went into decline. As well as the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally unsafe conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were largely operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started in the town in the early 19th century, and the town was celebrated for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was later transformed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen seventy seven, drawing increasing amounts of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another railway station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately a decade later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul was first built in the 14th Cent, although it was reconstructed during the 19th century and today has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 foot).
