Cromer Norfolk: Situated on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East Anglia, the coastal town and civil parish of Cromer has for many years been a fashionable holiday spot. Equally respected as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its lobsters and crabs, which have been an important income for the local fishermen since early times.

The town these days has a populace of around seven thousand seven hundred residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historic Past of Cromer: The name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book (1086), even if there certainly would have been Saxon encampments in the neighborhood, it is most likely that the community mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it sat where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. Another village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for many years been totally swallowed by the ocean, around four hundred metres north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself long ago sat some distance inland, but the town of Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was slowly wiped out by the ocean during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived throughout the centuries principally due to the skill of its fishermen, a business which did well up to the 1960's as fish stocks decreased. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town had been engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The often severe conditions off Norfolk's coastline, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were predominantly operated by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was built on Cromer Pier, permitting lifeboats powered by motor to take over from previously rowed craft.

Tourism started out in Cromer in the early 1800s, and it was celebrated for its pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was turned into a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway was connected to Cromer in 1877, bringing increasing numbers of people to the area and firmly establishing it as a vacation destination. A second train station to the East Midlands opened approximately 10 years after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the fourteenth century, though it was rebuilt during the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
