The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Discovered on the northern coastline of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many decades been a favoured vacation destination. Additionally known for being a fishing town, Cromer is celebrated for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a major source of income for the local fishermen for many generations.

Cromer currently has a populace of approximately seven thousand seven hundred inhabitants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The Historical Past of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not identified in the 1086 Domesday Book, however it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon townships around the area, it is certainly likely that the village identified as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, because it stood where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now stands. A further settlement recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely swallowed by the sea, about four hundred metres from Cromer Pier.

Cromer once upon a time was positioned inland, but the former town of Shipden which was previously the coastal town, was over time destroyed by the eroding effect of the sea in the Middle Ages and eventually Cromer took its place.

Cromer has survived financially across the centuries for the most part due to the activities of its fishing fleet, an industry which prospered up to the 1960's when stocks of fish diminished. Apart from the famous Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The oftentimes perilous conditions off the shoreline of Norfolk, led to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were most commonly operated by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to take over from previously man-powered craft.

Tourism started in the town in the first half of the nineteenth century, and it was renowned for its clean air and beneficial bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in 1820 as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, drawing an ever-increasing amount of people to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second station to the East Midlands opened roughly ten years later.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, although it was reconstructed during the 19thC and at the moment has got the tallest church tower in the county (160 feet).
