The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Sitting on the northern coast of Norfolk in East Anglia, the seaside resort and civil parish of Cromer has been a popular vacation hotspot since the 1800s. Also renowned as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, that have been a significant income for its local fishermen since early times.

The town at this time has a population of just below eight thousand occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, however it is not disputed that there were Anglo Saxon encampments around the area, it is possible that the village mentioned as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what came to be Cromer, given it sat where the St Peter and Saint Paul parish church now lies. A second settlement listed in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been totally swallowed by the ocean, around four hundred metres to the northeast of the pier.

Cromer long ago sat inland from the coast, but the town of Shipden that was previously the coastal town, was little by little demolished by the rough seas during the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has survived economically across the generations largely through the activity of its fishing fleet, a business that thrived up to the 1960's when stocks of fish declined. In addition to the celebrated Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the local fishermen had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The quite often risky conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, lead to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early 19th century, the lifeboats were often crewed by the local fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, making it possible for lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism started out in the town in the first half of the 1800s, and it was recognized for the pure air and health improving sea bathing conditions. First built in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was later redesigned as a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway arrived at Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, delivering more and more tourists to the town and establishing it as a vacation destination. An additional station to the East Midlands was unveiled about a decade after this.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church was first built in the fourteenth century, but was remodelled during the 19thC and today has got the highest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
