The Norfolk Town of Cromer: Situated on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in East Anglia, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured vacation destination. Furthermore known as being a fishing town, Cromer is famous for its crabs and lobsters, providing an essential income source for the local fishermen throughout the decades.

Cromer these days has a populace of just under 8,000 occupants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer History: It is odd that the name "Cromer" wasn't documented in the Domesday Book (1086), even though it is undeniable that there were Saxon settlements around the area, it is quite possible that the village recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, as it stood where the parish church now lies. An additional settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely under the sea, about 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer originally stood some distance inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually demolished by the eroding effect of the sea during the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

The town has endured throughout the decades predominantly due to the expertise of its fishermen, an industry that prospered up until the 1960's when fish numbers diminished. In addition to lobster and the famed Cromer Crab, the fishermen of the town were being occupied drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The typically hazardous conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, resulted in the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were frequently manned by Cromer's fishermen. In the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, which permitted motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed vessels.

Tourism commenced in Cromer early in the nineteenth century, and it was famous for the clean air and healthy bathing conditions. First built in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was transformed into a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system arrived at Cromer in the 1870s, driving increasing numbers of travellers to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately a decade later.

The Saint Peter and Saint Paul parish church has its origin in the 14th Cent, although was remodelled in the 19thC and today has the highest church tower in Norfolk (at 160 foot).
