Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the north sea coast of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside town and parish of Cromer has been a celebrated vacation spot ever since the nineteenth century. Additionally reputable as being a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its crabs and lobsters, which have been an important source of income for its local fishermen since early times.

The town nowadays has a population of approximately seven thousand seven hundred residents and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The History of Cromer: It is notable that the name "Cromer" was not recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, although there were certainly Anglo Saxon communes in the region, it is plausible that the settlement registered as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later re-named Cromer, considering that it stood where the Saint Peter and St Paul parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today totally under the sea, about 400 meters north-east of the pier.

Cromer itself originally stood some distance from the coast, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was over time wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured over the decades by and large by the activities of its fishermen, an industry which flourished up until the 1960's when fish numbers went into decline. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the town's fishing fleet were kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The all too often hazardous sea conditions off the coast of Norfolk, resulted in the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early nineteenth century, the lifeboats were regularly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. In the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed lifeboats.

Tourism developed in the town in the early 1800s, and it was recognized for the clean air and health enhancing sea bathing conditions. First constructed in eighteen twenty, the Hotel de Paris was a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was remodelled as a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The train was connected to the town in eighteen seventy seven, driving an ever-increasing quantity of tourists to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. Another train station to the East Midlands opened up about 10 years after this.

The parish church of St Peter and Saint Paul first dates from the 14th century, but was remodelled in the 19thC and currently has the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
