Cromer Norfolk: Located on the northern coastline of Norfolk county in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has been a popular vacation destination ever since the 1800s. Additionally recognized as a fishing town, Cromer is famed for its lobsters and crabs, which have been a vital income for its fishermen for many hundreds of years.

Cromer today has a population of roughly eight thousand residents and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historic Past: It is significant that the name "Cromer" was not recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086, even if there were certainly Anglo Saxon settlements around the area, it is very likely that the village listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what later became Cromer, given it stood where the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul now stands. A different village recognized in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is today entirely under the sea, roughly four hundred meters to the northeast of Cromer's pier.

Cromer at one time sat some way inland from the coast, but a town called Shipden that was formerly the coastal town, was steadily eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and finally Cromer replaced it.

The town has sustained financially through the decades principally due to the competence of its fishing fleet, an industry which thrived up until the nineteen sixties when fish stocks diminished. In addition to lobster and the famous Cromer Crab, the local fishermen were engaged in drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The oftentimes life-threatening conditions off Norfolk's seacoast, lead to the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in 1804, the lifeboats were typically crewed by the local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected at the end of Cromer Pier, allowing motor powered lifeboats to replace previously rowed vessels.

The holiday business commenced in the town early in the 1800s, and the town was renowned for its pure air and healthy bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first constructed in eighteen twenty as a seaside home for Lord Suffield, it was altered to a hotel in 1830 by one Pierre le Francois.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying an ever-increasing amount of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. An alternate station connecting it to the East Midlands was unveiled approximately 10 years after this.

The parish church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul originates from the 14th Cent, although was reconstructed in the 19thC and today has the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (160 feet).
