Cromer Norfolk: Located on the north coastline of Norfolk in East of England, the seaside town and civil parish of Cromer has been a favorite vacation spot since the 19th century. Furthermore famous for being a fishing town, Cromer is known for its lobsters and crabs, providing a leading income for the local fishermen for many generations.

The town today has a population of just under eight thousand occupants and its motto is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - - 301863The Story of Cromer: The name "Cromer" wasn't quoted in the Domesday Book (1086), despite the fact that it is not disputed that there were Saxon townships in the neighborhood, it is conceivable that the settlement noted as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, considering that it stood where the parish church now stands. A further settlement noted in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has long since been entirely swallowed by the sea, roughly 400m north-east of the pier.

Cromer once upon a time stood some way inland, but the former town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was gradually over time eradicated by the sea in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has endured over the decades largely through the activities of its fishermen, an industry which thrived up until the 60's as fish numbers dropped. Apart from lobster and the legendary Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being engaged in long-lining for cod and drifting for herring.

The routinely treacherous sea conditions off the coastline of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were regularly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was put up on Cromer Pier, enabling lifeboats powered by motor to take over from rowed craft.

The tourism industry started in Cromer early in the 1800s, and it was renowned for the clean air and restorative sea bathing conditions. First constructed in 1820, the Hotel de Paris was a beachside home for Lord Suffield, it was changed into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway system came to the town in the 1870s, drawing an increasing quantity of people to the town and firmly establishing it as a holiday destination. Another station joining it to the East Midlands was opened around a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul has its origin in the 14th C, although it was reconstructed in the 1800s and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county (at 160 feet).
