The Norfolk Resort of Cromer: Standing on the north coastline of Norfolk in Eastern England, the seaside resort and parish of Cromer has for many years been a favoured holiday spot. The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863The History of Cromer: It is significant that the name "Cromer" wasn't mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if there certainly would have been Anglo Saxon communes in the neighborhood, it is plausible that the settlement recorded as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, since it was located where the parish church now lies. A different village mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, has for centuries been completely covered by the sea, about four hundred metres from Cromer's pier.

Cromer originally stood inland, but a town called Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively destroyed by the rough seas in the Middle Ages and ultimately Cromer replaced it.

Cromer has survived over the centuries for the most part due to the skill of its fishing fleet, an industry that flourished up until the nineteen sixties at which time stocks of fish declined. As well as the famed Cromer Crab and the lobsters, the fishing fleet had been kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The generally perilous sea conditions off Norfolk's shoreline, contributed to the Cromer Lifeboat Station being established in 1804, the lifeboats were predominantly manned by local fishermen. During the nineteen twenties, a lifeboat station was erected on Cromer Pier, enabling motor powered lifeboats to replace rowed craft.

The holiday industry commenced in Cromer early in the 19th century, and it was recognized for its pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a seaside residence for Lord Suffield, it was adapted into a hotel in eighteen thirty by one Pierre le Francois.

The railway line found its way to Cromer in eighteen seventy seven, drawing growing amounts of visitors to the area and establishing it as a vacation hotspot. The second railway station joining it to the East Midlands opened up around a decade later.

The parish church of Saint Peter and St Paul originates from the 14th Cent, though it was remodelled in the Nineteenth century and now boasts the tallest church tower in the county of Norfolk (at 160 feet).
