Cromer in Norfolk: Standing on the northern coast of the county of Norfolk in East of England, the coastal resort and parish of Cromer has been a well liked vacation hotspot ever since the 1800s. The town nowadays has a population of approximately eight thousand inhabitants and its nickname is "Gem of the Norfolk Coast".

The Gangway, Cromer - geograph.org.uk - 301863Cromer Historical Past: It is notable that the name "Cromer" wasn't recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book, even if it is clear that there were Anglo Saxon townships in the area, it is possible that the settlement listed as Shipden-Juxta-Felbrigg was what eventually became Cromer, given it was situated where the parish Church of Saint Peter and St Paul now lies. A second settlement registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as Shipden-Juxta-Mere, is now completely under the sea, around 400m from the pier.

Cromer long ago stood some distance inland, but the town of Shipden which was formerly the coastal town, was progressively wiped out by the sea in the Middle Ages and consequently Cromer took its place.

The town has endured financially through the generations largely through the activities of its fishing fleet, a business which flourished up to the nineteen sixties when stocks of fish declined. In addition to lobster and the renowned Cromer Crab, the fishing fleet were being kept busy drifting for herring and long-lining for cod.

The commonly treacherous conditions off the coast of Norfolk, triggered the establishment of the Cromer Lifeboat Station in the early 1800s, the lifeboats were mainly crewed by Cromer's fishermen. During the 1920's, a lifeboat station was constructed at the end of Cromer Pier, permitting powered lifeboats to take over from rowed craft.

Tourism developed in Cromer in the first half of the 19th century, and it was recognized for the pure air and restorative bathing conditions. The Hotel de Paris was first built in eighteen twenty as a coastal residence for Lord Suffield, it was later altered to a hotel in 1830 by Pierre le Francois.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen seventy seven, carrying more and more people to the area and establishing it as a holiday hotspot. An additional station connecting it to the East Midlands was opened approximately 10 years later.

The St Peter and St Paul parish church has its origin in the fourteenth century, although it was rebuilt during the 1800s and now has got the tallest church tower in Norfolk (160 feet).
